Tips for the Race Committee

1. Get there early.  Leave the dock by 5:30.  Have at least two people.
2. Get 3 buoys, two starting flags, bag of signal flags, score sheet.
3. Decide if wind is up or down the river.
4. Set two windward marks, about 150 yds apart.  Set them closest to the shore that’s more directly into the wind.  Don’t set them in the barge channel.
5. Go down wind and set the starting line.  The pin end is on port and your boat is on starboard as you look up the course.  Again set it towards the shore that gives it a more into the wind course.  Course should run about from Harrods creek to Goose creek.  Make the line long enough to accommodate all the boats.  Typically people set too short a line. To protect your boat, set the line so the pin end is favored.
6. Starting sequence
a. At 5:59 blow horn 5-6 times to signal 1 minute before the start sequence.
b. At 6:00 blow horn once, raise BLUE flag and START THE STOPWATCH.
c. At 6:04 lower the Blue flag
d. At 6:05 blow horn once, raise RED flag. Start of JAM B. Watch for over early people.  Hail ALL CLEAR or announce who’s early
e. At 6:09 lower Blue flag
f. At 6:10 blow horn once, raise RED flag.  Start of JAM A.
g. At 6:14 lower Red flag
h. At 6:15 blow horn once, raise RED flag.  Start of SPIN B.
i. At 6:19 lower Red flag
j. At 6:20 blow horn once, raise RED flag.  Start of SPIN A.
7. Watch how fast everyone does the first leg.  You must decide early if it’s a two, three or four leg race.  If it’s light, stay where you are and do a two leg race.  If it’s very heavy, stay where you are, put up the GREEN flag which signals GO and run a four leg race.

If in between, move the boat to either of the windard marks.  Anchor to the starboard side of that mark to create the finish line.

When in doubt, run a shorter race rather than a longer race.  The wind tends to die and it’s better to get in a race than not finish.

 8. Write down the times for the finishing boats.  Note DNF for those who started but didn’t finish.  The stopwatch should have been started at the BLUE flag and never touched after that.
